History of Block Panchayat
Cherpu Block Panchayat is situated in the southernmost part of Thrissur Taluk. The Karuvannur River, which separates Thrissur and Mukundapuram taluks, also forms the boundary of the block. A major portion of the block consists of Kole lands, paddy fields, and water bodies, including the Jubilee Thevar Padavu, which lies up to about 1.5 metres below sea level.
Pallisserikunnu, situated in Vallachira and Cherpu Grama Panchayats, is another distinct geographical area, rising to an elevation of up to 1,500 metres above sea level. According to scholars, Cherpu is the geographical region that connects these two contrasting landscapes. Both the Grama Panchayat and the Block Panchayat are known by the name Cherpu.
Until about a decade ago, the Assembly constituency was also known as Cherpu. When the People's Planning Programme was launched in 1996, Kurkancheri and Ollur Grama Panchayats were part of Cherpu Block Panchayat. In 2000, however, these two panchayats became part of the Thrissur Municipal Corporation.
At present, Cherpu is a small Block Panchayat comprising four Grama Panchayats: Cherpu, Avinissery, Paralam, and Vallachira.
